Port-Louis

Mauritius has its own way to think about entrepreneurship.
Technology is definitely not central point and the traditional businesses are still the most created. Rationales behind that are (1) a traditional financing system, unable to back early-stage investors nor non-traditional businesses, and (2) an eroding culture of creativity and thinking-out-of-the-box, due to the educational system and the lack of openness to overseas economy.

Still Mauritius is rich of a multicultural society, a competitive talent pool and a very attractive fiscal scheme that helps MultiNational companies to establish there. Also, concentrated capitals, owned by few proprietary families in the Island, enable major investment is all new Real Estate and Utilities. Here are greenfields that would have been ideal for smart grids and smart mobility experiments.

Opportunities are there, but solutions and initiatives still hiding. Waiting for the new generation to overcome cultural barriers, nurture greater ambitions, and make this small market a test bed for greater markets in Africa.

Remarkable places

The Hive

The Hive looks like a regular coworking space, but its ambition is very unique on the island. The space aims at providing access to working spaces all over the island so that you spend more time with your clients than in the traffic.
Also, the space is trying to mix the working space with some farming fields to foster agritech.
